Sodium chloride against Dawestrema cycloancistrium in juvenile Arapaima gigas

چکیده

The aim of the present study was to assess use sodium chloride (NaCl) against monogenoid trematodes infestations in pirarucu (Arapaima gigas). Two assays were conducted with juveniles, first comprising an vitro exposure 8, 9, 10, and 11 g·L−1 NaCl second, vivo test at same concentrations. best results observed for 1-h exposures NaCl, resulting 60% 100% parasite mortality, respectively. In 8 10 36 22% efficient, respectively, following 2 h exposure, no mortality. Some dose-dependent changes exposed fish, such as decreased hemoglobin MCHC values highest concentration compared other concentrations control group. Most frequent gill tissue alterations capillary dilatation mucus secretions group (10 g·L−1). Decreased mean (p < 0.05) water pH increased electrical conductivity noted conclusion, our findings suggest that exhibits low toxicity toward without physiological anthelmintic activity directly influenced by time concentration. Moreover, monogenoids gills fish identified Dawestrema cycloancistrium.

Hepatic Calyptospora sp. (Apicomplexa) infection in a wild-born, aquarium-held clutch of juvenile arapaima Arapaima gigas (Osteoglossidae).

From Manaus, Brazil, 12 juvenile arapaima Arapaima gigas were imported to the United States and sent to 2 public aquaria, 1 private hobbyist, and 1 retailer. All 12 fish became ill within 4 to 6 wk of arrival, with signs of anorexia, lethargy, depigmentation, and ascites, and subsequently died despite antibiotic and anthelminthic therapy. Gross necropsies of 7 fish revealed serosanguinous coelo...

Parasitic infections in juveniles of Arapaima gigas (Schinz, 1822) cultivated in the Peruvian Amazon.

The paiche, Arapaima gigas represents a socio-economically important species in the Peruvian Amazon, and actually an intensive production for human consumption has emerged during the last years. Therefore, more studies are required in fish farming development, especially concerning populations of parasites that affect fish production yields. Eighty specimens of paiche collected between Septembe...

Conserved Cytogenetic Features in the Amazonian Arapaima, Arapaima gigas (Schinz 1822) from Jamari River, Rondônia–Brazil

Specimens of Arapaima gigas from Jamari River (RO) were cytogenetically analyzed. A diploid number of 2n=56 chromosomes was found (28m-sm + 28st-a). Secondary constrictions were observed on the short arms of chromosome 3. Nucleolar Organizer Regions (NORs) were detected at the subterminal region on short arms of the third chromosomal pair by both silver nitrate staining and FISH with 45S rDNA p...

Goezia spinulosa (Nematoda: Raphidascarididae), a pathogenic parasite of the arapaima Arapaima gigas (Osteichthyes).

The nematode Goezia spinulosa (Diesing, 1839) (Raphidascarididae) is redescribed based on specimens found in the stomach and intestine of the naturally infected arapaima Arapaima gigas (Schinz) from the Mexiana Island, Amazon River Delta, Brazil. Light and electron microscopy examinations revealed some previously unreported or inaccurately described morphological features in the species, such a...

Mechanical properties and the laminate structure of Arapaima gigas scales.

The Arapaima gigas scales play an important role in protecting this large Amazon basin fish against predators such as the piranha. They have a laminate composite structure composed of an external mineralized layer and internal lamellae with thickness of 50-60 μm each and composed of collagen fibers with ~1 μm diameter. The alignment of collagen fibers is consistent in each individual layer but ...
